Circular silver medal with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a red enamel triangle centrally, inscribed to the left, right and lower sides respectively ‘NATIONAL’ ‘SAFELY FIRST’ ‘ASSOCIATION’, circumscribed above ‘SAFE DRIVING COMPETITION’, inscribed below ‘5 YEARS’ and on a ribbon at the base ‘DRIVERS AWARD’; the reverse with the engraved attribution ‘J. W. MACKENZIE’, maker’s mark of J. A. Wylie & Co. and silver hallmarks for Birmingham, 1934; on original striking ribbon with silver top bar engraved ‘1934’ and mounted with pin for wear. The National Safety First Association was formed in 1923 in response to the rapid rise in road traffic and consequent accidents. In 1941 the Association changed its title to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and it remains active today. A good period medal.
